Founded in 2015, Zilker Belts was born with a mission to embrace handmade craftsmanship while bringing a classic Argentine style to our Austin home and beyond. We're proud to support four great local non-profit organizations: Austin Pets Alive, Austin Sunshine Camps, Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, and Save Muny.
Austin Pets Alive
When Austin Pets Alive! started rescuing animals in 2008, Austin was somewhat rich in resources that prevented births. For almost ten years, more and more resources were put into spay and neuter programs, but the live outcome rate at our city shelter was stuck around 50%. Of course, the population of Austin was quickly growing, so it’s likely that the spay and neuter resources were helping our live outcome rate from getting worse.
While several resources were going into prevention and reducing intake, there was no effort to increase live outcomes from the shelter. Austin Pets Alive! saw that gap and created programs to save the key demographics of pets that hadn’t been making it out of our municipal shelter alive. These key groups of animals included puppies with parvovirus, unweaned kittens, cats with ringworm, dogs and cats in need of additional behavioral support and/or additional medical attention.
Austin Sunshine Camps
In 1928, The Young Men’s Business League of Austin recognized the serious community threat of youth tuberculosis and established the Austin Sunshine Camps in Zilker Park, as it was said that exposure to sunshine could promote healing from the disease. The park provided a space in which local economically disadvantaged children could gain weight, grow strong, and spend time outdoors. Today, Austin Sunshine Camps is still serving youth living near or below the poverty line. Our programs enrich the community by encouraging and facilitating the power to succeed through education and healthy living. Austin Sunshine Camps renders the space and comfort kids need to look beyond their current situation and dream big.
HAAM - Health Alliance for Austin MusiciansHAAM provide access to affordable health care for Austin’s low-income working musicians, with a focus on prevention and wellness. Many Austin musicians are self-employed and have no access to health insurance or basic health care. They often work multiple jobs and struggle to pay for food, clothing and shelter, with nothing left for health care.
That’s where HAAM comes in. By resolving challenges such as long-neglected teeth to hearing loss, heart problems and depression, HAAM and its partners improve and save musicians’ lives and enhance Austin’s economy and quality of life. Austin is the Live Music Capital of the World, and they aim to keep it that way.
“Muny” is a beloved urban green space and civil rights landmark worthy of protection. Save Muny is dedicated to saving Lions Municipal Golf Course from development and preserving its urban green space, civil rights history, and golf legacy for the enjoyment of future generations of Austinites.
